Many systems fail because they choose between two extremes: complete freedom or complete control. Neither scales well. Enabling constraints create enough structure to guide behavior without eliminating local adaptation. They define boundaries, guardrails, expectations, and feedback channels while leaving room for judgment and experimentation. Good constraints increase capability. Poor constraints reduce it. The goal is not restriction. It is creating conditions where useful behavior can emerge repeatedly. Without enabling constraints, coordination collapses and behavior fragments. With excessive constraints, innovation stalls and adaptation slows. The most effective systems provide just enough structure to support learning.
