Metacognition is the ability to observe and influence your own thinking while it is happening. It includes noticing assumptions, recognizing emotional responses, identifying cognitive patterns, and adjusting interpretation and action. Most thinking is automatic. Metacognition makes it visible, interruptible, and adaptable.
